How to fix a leaky roof and make it new again?

Homeowners usually get an anxiety attack when they experience a leaky roof situation. However, this isn’t something serious you should stress about. It can be completed in a couple of hours, and you don’t have to be a professional to finish this project.

Believe it or not, tracking down the leak is sometimes harder than the actual repair. Water tends to travel and often damage might be far away from the source. So be prepared to do some work before you fix the problem, and we are going to show you how.

Finding a leak

First of all, you should inspect the lack of shingles because they can help you notice to spot quickly. Use the flashlight to examine the underside of the roof. In this case, check whether the light goes through the plywood.

Also, see whether you have some dark patches on your roof. If it hasn’t rained recently, they might not be easy to spot. On the other hand, if you notice areas of black mold, it is likely that this is where your roof leaks.

A trick for difficult leaks

If you are still struggling to find a spot, then ask someone to help you and head to the roof with a gardening hose. Start soaking the area where the leak has appeared in the house. Your helper should stay inside and wait for the drops to appear.

Let the house run for a couple of minutes before you switch to another area. The entire process can take well over an hour, so be patient and don’t move the hose too soon.

Small leak repairs

In most cases, plumbing vent boots are made of plastic or even two-piece meal units. You should check the plastic bases for cracks and metal bases for split seams, then examine the rubber boot surrounding the pipe. It can be damaged or torn, which allows the water to enter the house along the pipeline.

With any of these problems, you should buy a new vent boot to replace the old one. On the other hand, if nails at the base are missing or pulled free, then you should replace them with the rubber-washer screws utilized for the metal roofing system.

Fix roof vents

When repairing the roof, you should inspect the cracked housings on plastic roof vents and broken seams on metal ones.

Many homeowners use caulk to solve the problem, but you should keep in mind it’s not long lasting. There is no other way than replacing the damaged vents. Also, look for pulled or missing nails at the bottom base and replace when with screws. Usually, you can remove the pins under the shingles on both sides and pull out the vents.
